Martin Amidu, the special prosecutor, has indirectly appointed former president John Mahama as official one of the government.
While he did not mention the former president’s name, on June 20, 2020, he mentioned an interview given to Daily Graphic.
Mahama broke his silence over last month’s Airbus controversy denying claims of corruption in buying the two Ghana Armed Forces Airbus aircraft. He also dismissed arguments he profited from the contract.
Crown Court Ruling on Airbus
It should be recalled that on February 1, in some countries, including Ghana, South Korea, Mexico, Colombia, and Malaysia, the UK’s Royal Courts of Justice found Dutch company Airbus SE guilty of paying bribes in shady transactions.
For Ghana, government officials who signed the contract with Airbus agents like Samuel Mahama suspected to be a brother of former President John Mahama were implicated in the scandal in 2011 and 2015.
“From 2009 to 2015, the Airbus Defense Company employed Intermediary 5, a close relative of a high-ranking elected official of the Ghanaian Government (Government Official 1) as its BP for the proposed sale to the Government of Ghana of three military transport aircraft,” read part of the ruling on the Ghana contract.
“A number of Airbus employees knew Intermediary 5 was a close relative of Government Official 1 who was a key decision-maker on the proposed sales. A number of Airbus workers received or agreed on success-based fee payments to Intermediary 5 of about € 5 million, “court records show.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promptly referred the matter to the Special Prosecutor’s Office (OSP) along with Martin Amidu, the Special Prosecutor who initiated a formal investigation into the scandal.
He revealed in February that he had summoned four people including British Actor Phil Middlemiss and Samuel Mahama, and released their online passport details.
Public Government 1: Unmasked
In a statement released on Friday 24 July 2020, Martin Amidu said official 1 of the government is linked by ‘blood’ to Samuel Mahama
“Among other explanations for the letter to that Ministry, the full-blooded elder brother of Samuel Adam Mahama who, without a doubt, and the evidence available to this Office, replied to the definition of the elected official 1 of the State, allegedly granted a denial interview to the Daily Graphic, published on June 20, 2020.
Serving government appointees were unable to obtain the voice record of this interview in order to allow the Office to challenge the former president with his own admissions in the interview as a response to the explanation of his statement read to Samuel Adam Mahama ‘s brother as Intermediary 5.
Meanwhile, the SP has written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanding that an opportunity be granted to Samuel Mahama, who is on the Interpol list, to consider voluntarily evacuating to Ghana.
“Samuel Adam Mahama must be given the opportunity to willingly accept his return to Ghana and submit himself to the Republic of Ghana to vindicate himself and save that country from the public purse of the millions of foreign exchanges that will be spent on extraditing him from the United Kingdom or any other nation to Ghana in enforcement of the Interpol Red Notice provided against him as a fugitive for the purpose of extraditing him to Ghana.
